In this workshop, Jana Schirmer shares her complete process of painting a Fantasy Illustration from start to finish in Adobe Photoshop using a workflow that she uses for almost all of her professional and personal work. Starting with ideation and reference gathering, she covers the initial sketch phase and preparation, colors and light, mixer brushes, photo-bashing, and final 2D rendering techniques. For artists looking to develop their digital painting skills, this title provides an opportunity to see how a leading illustrator efficiently approaches a painting using a variety of time saving techniques.

01SketchFree

Jana Schirmer begins her workshop with a lesson emphasizing that successful digital painting relies on thorough preparation and a systematic workflow rather than spontaneous creation. Her approach of breaking complex illustrations into manageable stages, from initial concept through thumbnails, line art, masking, and value studies, demonstrates how proper planning and willingness to restart when necessary lead to stronger final artwork. Her emphasis on using references and seeking feedback also demonstrates that great art is a collaborative, research-intensive process.

02Colors and Light

This lesson demonstrates Jana's systematic approach to digital painting that prioritizes flexibility and realism through proper layer management and lighting techniques. By separating local colors from lighting effects and using multiple light sources consistently across all scene elements, artists can learn how to create more dynamic and cohesive artwork while maintaining the ability to make adjustments throughout the process. Her technique allows for professional-level results while keeping the workflow organized and client-friendly for potential revisions.

03Mixer Brush and Photobash

This lesson teaches why, while digital tools such as the Mixer Brush and photo bashing can significantly speed up the painting process and add realism, they should enhance, not replace, artistic vision and skill. Jana demonstrates why the key to successful implementation lies in thoughtful integration, ethical practices, and in maintaining a non-destructive workflow that allows for continued refinement. Her techniques are particularly valuable for client work where efficiency and professional results are essential.

04Rendering the Characters

This rendering phase represents the most time-consuming part of the digital painting process, though much of the critical decision-making has already been completed in earlier stages. Jana demonstrates that successful rendering relies heavily on a solid foundation of proper lighting, composition, and color relationships established in advance. She discusses why the key to effective rendering is patience, working systematically from large forms to small details, and not being afraid to restart problematic areas when necessary.

05More Render and Final Adjustments

This final lesson demonstrates that successful digital painting relies more on understanding fundamental principles of light, value, and composition than on technical perfection or detailed rendering. Jana advocates for a balanced approach that knows when to add detail and when to stay loose, ultimately creating artwork that feels natural rather than over-processed. The key takeaway is that most important decisions occur early in the process, with the rendering phase focused primarily on refinement and on maintaining the original vision.
